Comparison of sprinkler droplet size and velocity measurements using a laser precipitation meter and photographic method NWISRL
King, B.A.; Winward, T.W.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
Kinetic energy of water droplets has a substantial effect on development of a soil surface seal and infiltration rate of bare soil. Methods for measuring sprinkler droplet size and velocity needed to calculate droplet kinetic energy have been developed and tested over the past 50 years, each with advantages, disadvantages, and limitations. A laser precipitation meter and photographic method were used to measure droplet size and velocity from an impact sprinkler at three pressures and one nozzle size. Significant differences in cumulative volume drop size distributions derived from the two measurement methods were found, especially at the highest operating pressure. Significant differences in droplet velocities were found between measurement methods as...

Drinking Water Treatment Residuals: A Reveiw of Recent Uses NWISRL
Ippolito, J.A.; Barbarick, K.A.; Elliot, H.A..
Coagulants such as alum, [Al2(SO4)3X14H2O], ferric chloride [FeCl3], or ferric sulfate [Fe2(SO4)3] are commonly used to remove particulate and dissolved constituents from water supplies in the production of drinking water. The resulting waste product, called water-treatment residuals (WTR), contains precipitated Al and Fe oxyhydroxides resulting in a strong affinity for anionic species. Recent research has focused on using WTR as cost-effective materials to reduce soluble phosphorus (P) in soils, runoff, and land-applied organic wastes (manures and biosolids). Studies show P adsorption by WTR to be fast and nearly irreversible, suggesting long-term stable immobilization of WTR-bound P. Because excessive WTR application can induce P deficiency in crops,...

Drought tolerance selection of sugarbeet hybrids NWISRL
Tarkalson, D.D.; Eujayl, Imad A.; Beyer, Werner; King, B.A..
Increased water demands and drought have resulted in a need to indentify crop hybrids that are drought tolerant, requiring less irrigation to sustain yields. This study was conducted to assess differences in drought tolerance among a group of genetically diverse sugarbeet hybrids. The study was conducted over three consecutive growing seasons (2008-2010) at the USDA Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory in Kimberly, Idaho on a Portneuf silt loam soil (coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid). Drought tolerance was evaluated by measuring sucrose yield production of six breeding hybrids of Klein Wanzlebener Saatzucht (KWS SAAT AG) and one commercial hybrid (Betaseed Inc.) under six water input treatments. Hybrid...

Dynamic systems approach assess and manage water resources in river basins Scientia Agricola
Sánchez-Román,Rodrigo Máximo; Folegatti,Marcos Vinicius; Orellana González,Alba María Guadalupe; Silva,Rogério Teixeira da.
The Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí River Basins (RB-PCJ) are located in the States of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Brazil. By 2005, 5.8% of Brazil's General National Product-GNP was produced there. Such economic development has created a huge demand for water resources. The availability of water resources was assessed by running a dynamic systems simulation model to manage these resources in the RB-PCJ (WRM-PCJ), considering five 50-year simulations. WRM-PCJ was developed as a tool to aid the RB-PCJ Watershed Committee. The model computes water supply, demands, and contamination load from several consumers. When considering a Business-as-Usual scenario, by 2054, water demands will have increased up to 76%, 39% of the available water will come from...

Ecology, Planning, and River Management in the United States: Some Historical Reflections Ecology and Society
Reuss, Martin; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Martin.A.Reuss@HQ02.USACE.ARMY.MIL.
River ecologists are also river-basin planners. However, their role in planning has developed slowly over the decades since the beginning of the 20th century. Three major factors explain this phenomenon. First, ecologists focused on plant and animal communities rather than on broader policy issues related to land settlement and water development. Second, the federal government, and most state and local governments as well, used mainly economic criteria to justify projects. Intangible benefits, including the value of species or an aesthetically pleasing landscape, drew relatively little attention. Third, the public generally favored development, especially during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Only after World War II did the public's position shift in...

Economic drought management index to evaluate water institutions' performance under uncertainty AgEcon
Iglesias, Eva; Garrido, Alberto; Gomez-Ramos, Almudena.
Reservoir management and intertemporal water allocation are critical issues in semiarid regions where agriculture has to confront highly variable rainfall patterns. In this paper, we derive and propose an economic drought management index (EDMI) to evaluate water institutions' performance to cope with drought risk. The EDMI is based on the optimal conditions of a stochastic dynamic optimisation problem that characterises reservoir management. The index's main advantages are its ease of interpretation and breadth of scope, as it incorporates information on hydrological processes, structural constraints, water institutions' rules, and the economic benefits of water use. An empirical application is developed to assess the institutional rules governing water...

Economically optimal water depth and grain yield of common bean subjected to different irrigation depths AGRIAMBI
Conceição,Chaiane G. da; Robaina,Adroaldo D.; Peiter,Marcia X.; Parizi,Ana R. C.; Conceição,João A. da; Bruning,Jhosefe.
ABSTRACT Common bean crop plays an important role in the world, not only in economic aspects but also in social development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the grain yield and the economically optimal water depth which reflects the maximum technical efficiency of the common bean crop. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse, in Alegrete - RS, from February to May 2016. A completely randomized design was used, consisting of five water replacement treatments (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125% crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and four replicates. Based on the obtained results, both water deficit and water excess directly affected the final grain yield of the crop. Maximum grain yield was 3,554.1 kg ha-1, obtained by applying 492.72 mm (100% ETc). On the...

Effect of different levels of water deficit on rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) crop Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Bilibio,Carolina; Carvalho,Jacinto de Assunção; Hensel,Oliver; Richter,Uwe.
Effects of different levels of water deficit applied during rapeseed crop development were assessed in a trial with metallic pots in greenhouse at the Department of Agricultural Engineering of Kassel University, Witzenhausen, Germany. A randomized block design was used with one cultivar (Ability Summer Rape) and three levels of water deficit (0, 30, and 60% of evapotranspiration) in three treatments and 20 replicates. Irrigation management was carried out through daily water balance, where ET = I - D; ET: evapotranspiration; I: irrigation; and D: drainage. The following evaluations were carried out weekly: stem diameter (mm); plant height (cm); number of leaves; number of branches and number of pods. At the end of the experiment, assessed total green...

Effects of riparian vegetation on the structure of the marginal aquatic habitat and the associated fish assemblage in a tropical Brazilian reservoir Biota Neotropica
Beltrão,Gabriel de Barros Moreira; Medeiros,Elvio Sergio Figueredo; Ramos,Robson Tamar da Costa.
Riparian zones represent areas of strong biological, physical and chemical interaction between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These areas are usually typified by high diversity of fauna, flora and environmental processes. The present study evaluates the littoral habitat structure and its fish fauna related to associations between presence and absence of natural riparian vegetal cover, in a reservoir in northeastern Brazil. Sampling was performed on marginal areas where riparian vegetation was present and where it had been removed for the plantation of sugar cane. For each type of marginal area three replicate sites were sampled during the wet season. Data on the habitat structure (submerged elements and substrate composition), fish and water quality...
